Annual school dinner - pheasant and other treats !

semi-overcast 8 °C

Last week I was invited for a fantastic anuual traditional school dinner organised by the head of the school's parent committee whose other string to his bow is his farming and hunting. As is tradition he hunted pheasant and plumed it and then served it on plates in small slithers raw. It was so fresh and tender it was out of this world ! I didn't eat it raw of course I cooked it 'shabu shabu' style that is to say boiled and also barbecued. It was delicious !

The location of this annual event (only my school colleagues allowed -it was so nice they invited me it makes me feel as if they've accepted me) was in a barn in the middle of tangerine orchards in the middle of the island of Jeju at the foot of Hallasan mountain. It was a clear starry night and the moon was full and we warmed ourselves by the oil barrel halves filled with charcoals where we cooked our meat ! The smells as you can imagine were divine - a mix of citrus fruits and sweet barbecued pheasant ! :o)

We also had fresh sushi which was a delight in itself too. All of it washed down with their local brew called soju - a little like vodka but only 22 percent proof.

If that wasn't enough feasting on Saturday night Barbara made us and some friends (Carolyn and Veronica) also teachers some of her delcious homemade lasagne, the real Italian deal - her grandmother's recipe - shit it was good and so was the red wine that went with it and the homemade chocolate mousse !

Sunday we went to the traditional market to buy our fruit and veg for the week and some meat and fish and we were unexpectedly invited by a sister of my dentist here to drink tea in her shop in the heart of the market ! It's a really cosy little place with lots of Korean arts and crafts and we were treated to some rosemary tea - so refreshing !

After we finsihed our Sunday off at one of our favourite black pig restaurants (black pig grilled is the local dish). There we supped on barbecued black pig ribs marinated in pear juice and soy sauce ! It never ceases to delight !
